Cost of JROTC to the San Francisco School District
The San Francisco Unified School District spends nearly ONE MILLION DOLLARS per year to subsidize the Pentagon’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program in our schools, based on the most recent figures from the school district.*
The average salary for JROTC instructors is $84,500,* plus benefits, as mandated by the Department of Defense. This is far more than the average salary of other San Francisco teachers. JROTC instructors are military officers selected by the Pentagon. The only educational requirement is a high school diploma or GED.
The Department of Defense requires the school district to hire TWO instructors for each 150 JROTC cadets. The school district normally hires ONE physical education (PE) teacher for each 300 students.
*See “Frequently Asked Questions about JROTC,” issued by the SFUSD, July 2008. The total cost of the JROTC program is $1,588,720. The Department of Defense contributes $599,085, leaving the district to pay the remaining $989,525.
